Police identify body found encased in barrel

Toronto police have confirmed the identity of the body found encased in concrete and submerged underwater in a barrel over the weekend. But homicide detectives won't reveal details until an afternoon news conference. The victim's family has been notified by police. Police made the gruesome discovery Sunday afternoon after receiving a telephone tip. The barrel was discovered about 100 metres offshore near a construction site Lower Jarvis Street and Queens Quay. Police pulled it out of the water shortly after noon on Sunday. Due to the weight of the barrel, police said it probably took more than one person to dump it. Investigators also believe the barrel may have been dumped before construction began on the site, when the area was a paved parking lot. The site is being transformed into a public park.

It is really a tragic accident because no person should be put into a barrel and filled with concrete for a burrial. There are so many questions that we all would like to be answered but for now I can't write much about it considering they will let us know more this afternoon. For now, I can only say that I am happy they found the body and are doing something about it.

TTC bus driver attacked with fireworks

Police are looking for a suspect after a TTC bus driver was attacked with fireworks early Monday. The assault occurred as the bus stopped along a residential part of Driftwood Ave. near Yorkwoods Gate, in the northwest end of the city, at around 1 a.m. Investigators say a young man approached the open door of the bus and aimed what appeared to be a Roman candle firework at the driver. Roman candles are designed to shoot a series of flaming balls into the sky. The bus driver was hit in the arm and the right side of his head. He felt a burning sensation but did not suffer immediately visible wounds, and refused ambulance services. Police described the suspect as a black male aged 17 to 19, weighing around 155 pounds and standing at about 5 foot 7. He was wearing a black or dark blue sweater, with the hood up, as well as dark pants. He was last seen heading southbound on Driftwood Ave.

I don't know what drives people to do such idiotic things but this incident is one that is in my top 10 dumb acts. It seems to me people are acting without thinking first. As I read on, many more accidents have been caused because of Roman Candles and I feel Canada should ban them.

Jamaica's security forces, gunmen clash

Jamaica's security forces clashed with masked gunmen allied with an alleged drug kingpin for a second straight day Monday as a multi-front battle against gangs spread to slums outside the capital. Police and soldiers came under heavy fire in barricaded battle zones in the West Kingston stronghold of Christopher (Dudus) Coke, who is trying to avoid extradition to the U.S. on drug and arms trafficking charges. Military helicopters with mounted guns buzzed above the impoverished area, between plumes of black smoke. West Kingston, which includes the Trenchtown slum where reggae superstar Bob Marley was raised, is the epicentre of the violence. But on Monday, security agents were also under attack in troubled areas outside that patchwork of gritty slums. Gunmen shot at police while trying to erect barricades in a poor section of St. Catherine parish, which is just outside the two parishes where the government on Sunday implemented a month-long state of emergency.

It is good that Jamaica's security forces are doing something about it but I feel they should be doing more than just shooting at the bad guys but implimenting new rules and laws againts drugs and gangs. They should control the streets much more. There are many things that Jamaica could use that they don't have like old fashioned 'gun registries.' That would take the guns out of the hands of criminals and restore peace and democracy to the land. They have to start doing more about it otherwise it will only get worse.

Iceland volcano ash halts European flights

An ash cloud from a volcano in Iceland forced aviation authorities in the United Kingdom and parts of northern Europe to close airspace and ground planes Thursday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The volcanic ash, which limits visibility and can damage engines, posed "a significant safety threat to aircraft," Britain's National Air Traffic Service said. The safety risks from the cloud prompted the agency to ban all non-emergency flights in British airspace until 7 a.m. local time Friday. The ash cloud also forced officials to ground flights in France, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands.

I think the decisions being made are that of a very smart decision because this eruption and the ash cloud is a serious danger and the actions being taken are very good ones. I personally think that the airports should support pillows and blankets at least to the people waiting in the airport for this ash cloud to subside. This would at least allow people to sleep comfortably during this time of chaos.

Canada firm on Afghan exit date

Prime Minister Stephen Harper told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton Tuesday that Canada will not extend its mission in Afghanistan beyond 2011. Harper and Clinton held a brief a bilateral meeting Tuesday morning ahead of a meeting of G8 foreign ministers in Gatineau, Que. Harper's statement comes after Clinton told CBC's The Hour that the United States would like Canada to stay in Afghanistan after 2011, the year Canada's combat mission in Afghanistan is scheduled to end. "It's up to Canada to decide how you deploy your forces," Clinton told host George Stroumboulopoulos in an interview that will be aired Tuesday evening. "But I'm not going to sit here and tell you we're happy about it because … that wouldn't be telling you the truth. We'd love to have Canada stay in this fight with us. But again, you know, you've got your own considerations and we respect that."

I feel we should send some troops to help America in Afghanistan because I feel once we pull our troops out, something big will happen and Canada will have to go back in and restart all their work they already completed. Not sending all the troops but only some combat troops I feel would be a wise decision.

Children Spending Too Much Time With the Media

Children and teens spend about as much time with media as they do sleeping, and the overexposure could take a toll on their health, a new U.S. study suggests. The study, reported in Monday's issue of the journal Pediatrics, showed Americans aged eight to 18 spend more than seven hours per day on average consuming both old media such as TV, movies and magazines as well as new media including internet, social networking sites, video and computer games and cell phones. Dr. Victor Strasburger of the University of New Mexico reviewed studies on the combined effects of all the media consumption. The study found exposure to the media can make children more prone to violence, early and unprotected sex, alcohol and tobacco consumption, obesity, and heavy television viewing.

I agree that we are overusing television, internet, and computer games way too much. I can relate because some days I might spend hours on the internet or watching TV. Now, kids are spending their whole day on the computer playing games, on internet, or checking email. I feel this is causing kids to ignore homework and what is most important and quickly going to the TV and other unhelpful technology. I think parents should also do something about this and try to limit their children from using the computer or watching TV so much. It is important we do this because if it is causing health problems, I sure don't want to be the kid who dies from overusage of the TV.
